*gasp!* Professional athlete uses illicit substance to improve performance!

I know this will come as a shock to the person (me) who reads this blog, but this week it came out that Barry Bonds admitted in grand jury testimony that he "unknowingly" used steroids provided to him by BALCO. Big fucking deal. It has been fairly obvious to anyone with eyeballs that he'd been using them for a while -- one's head doesn't get that big on its own. What does it matter anyway? This sanctity of the game horseshit the moralists in the mainstream sports media have been spouting for the past couple days should have died a long time ago. Every little change in the game makes things different than they were before. AstroTurf increased speed in the '70s and '80s, adjusting the mound height in the '60s gave hitters an advantage, higher player salaries gave all players the chance to not have to work a second job in the offseason and train more, in the 1910's the clean ball rule was introduced and gave hitters a big advantage. Et cetera. That the best player baseball has seen since Willie Mays has been using drugs to prolong his career won't matter a bit in the long run. The sun will rise in the east and set in the west. It will snow sometime this winter. Life will go on -- just watch.
