(finally) good Reds news, pt. 2...

Cincinnati's Dunn sets single-season strikeout mark

Showing the courage which could make him into a hell of a manager, Dave Miley started Adam Dunn today, when he was on the cusp of breaking the sing-season strikeout record, held for 34 years by Bobby Bonds.

If you'll remember a few years back, the pusillanimous manager of the Milwaukee Brewers sat shortstop Jose Hernandez on the last day of the season when he was at 188 K's (189 was the old record).

I'm glad Miley played Dunn for two reasons: (1) he's the Reds' best hitter, and (2) a strikeout is just an out, anyway. Good for Miley for recognizing those facts.

(finally) good Reds news, pt. 1...

Reds 2, Cubs 1

Somehow, the Reds took 3 of 4 from the Cubs this week, just about killing their chances for a wild card berth.

My hatred for the Cubs can be traced to one thing: attending Reds v. Cubs games in Cincinnati. A sea of annoying frat guys in blue Cubs gear descends on the GAB, filling the ballpark but turning half the stadium into Wrigley south. There is usually a fight. Occaisonally the blue half will chant, "Let's go Cubbies (clap, clap, clapclapclap)", to which the red side responds, "1908 (clap, clap, clapclapclap). It wasn't so bad when the Cubs sucked, which was forever until 1998, but now it is unbearable.

Freaks and Geeks update...

I watched the second disc of Freaks and Geeks tonight, and I finally figured out why Ryan loved it so much: his favorite actor ever, Goldberg of The Mighty Ducks fame, is an occaisonal guest star.

I'm back, bitches...

...not that anyone cares or anything. Or anyone reads this blog. Perhaps for the next couple weeks I'll post only Neil Young lyrics?

Out on the weekend...

See the lonely boy,
out on the weekend
Trying to make it pay.
Can't relate to joy,
he tries to speak and
Can't begin to say.

-- Neil Young, "Out On the Weekend", Harvest, 1972

Headed for the big D.

Rooney a Red...

Man Utd sign Rooney

Well, they went ahead and did it. Wayne Rooney, who Fergie calls "...the best young player [England] has seen in the past 30 years," signed for Manchester United from Everton for £27 million, a British record for a striker and teenager. ManU now has two of the four or five best teenagers in Europe in Rooney and Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo.

So great -- they have a good base for the future. But what about today? Arsenal isn't going to disappear, neither is Chelsea (unless Abramovich gets bored and buys a cricket team or something). As it stands, I don't think they have the defense of Chelsea or the attack of Arsenal. Here is what we're looking at right now (my starters in bold):

GK
Howard
Carroll
Ricardo

DR
G. Neville
P. Neville
Brown

DL
Heinze
P.Neville
Fortune

DC
Ferdinand
Silvestre

O'Shea
Brown
Keane
Heinze

MR
Ronaldo
Bellion
Fletcher

ML
Giggs
Ronaldo
Richardson

MC
Keane
Scholes

P. Neville
Fletcher
Djemba-Djemba
Kleberson
Miller

FC
van Nistelrooy
A. Smith

Rooney
Saha
Solskjaer

I imagine Rooney will play every other game or so for the next couple years, leaving the heavily in-form Smith (who I imagine would be a better partner for Ruud anyway) a good shot at a consistent run in the first team.
